I have learned, or, more-so, ‘relearned’ something today. By ‘relearn’ I mean that even though you may have read or heard about something once, three or thirty times, it may not really digest and register until it happens in real life, first hand, up close and personal. Or, maybe the knowledge is forgotten. For me, this forgotten knowledge is the importance of a smile. My definition of smile here is not limited to only making your face look happy; it’s the door held open or the five minutes of time given to a friend. It is truly incredible how much power is behind smiling at someone, acknowledging their presence or letting them know that they are important enough for you to give up five minutes of your own time to hear about whatever they have to say, whether it is important to you or not. It just amazes me how something so simple can have such an intense, positive effect on somebody’s day, week, and even life.
So my challenge to you is to smile at a stranger. See how they react. Allow your friend/roommate/parent, etc., to vent to you with no judgement or commentary attached and realize the power behind these simple, kind acts.
